Flying Fatties

I was going to give this post a polite title along the lines of ‘Flying with Larger Co-Passengers’ – then I thought, ‘What the hell – tell it like it is..’

As we all know the seats in the economy section (cattle class) of almost any aircraft are pretty meagre to say the least. For an average sized person there isn’t room to get particularly comfortable. If you’ve got long legs, like me, it’s a pretty miserable way to travel at the best of times. Trouble is, moving up to ‘business’ (club) or first class can be an expense many of us can’t afford.

You, like me may have experienced the next nightmare scenario.
Just as you settle yourself into your seat and prepare yourself for a few miserable hours in the air, imagine how much worse it is when an obese passenger plonks themselves next to you and parts of them slop over your arm rest encroaching on the tiny space you’ve been allocated.

There are countless horror stories of people coming off planes with cramp or squashed as flat as pancakes by the goliath next to them.

Is this really fair? – why should they pay the same price and then use half my seat as well.

To make matters worse, the airlines will weigh people’s baggage and charge extra where necessary. This means a small person with a large suitcase could actually pay more than a fat person with a shoe box.

Now I would propose some new rules –

If your backside won’t fit within the confines of the seat, either you should be forced to pay for 2 seats, or pay extra for a bigger seat up front, or go by barge.

Secondly, I would install large walk on scales and weigh the passenger along with their luggage. The overall weight is all the airline is really interested in – they’re just too politically correct to dare say it.

Just as they work out a standard weight allowance for luggage, they could recalculate it to include the passenger – this would be far fairer.
Let’s face it, had these people not been so active in the eating department, they wouldn’t be getting stuck between the arm rests on their next flight and I would be able to move my arms again.
