Winter Olympic Games

Amy Williams has just picked up Britain’s first individual gold medal in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. I think that’s great – but what was it for?

Having taken a closer look, this athlete seems to lead the world in lying face down on a tea tray and throwing herself down an icy shoot. This takes place on what looks like the bobsleigh track – the same place groups of two or four people jump into a bath tub and hang on for dear life reaching speeds of over 100 miles an hour.

These winter sports men and women certainly don’t lack courage – they, like their predecessors are as mad as hatters.

I mean, who first stood on top of a mountain and suggested strapping two 6ft long planks of wood to their feet and launching themselves over the edge?

The ski jump is clearly aimed at even madder people who aren’t satisfied with staying on the snow and need to try and scare themselves witless by skiing over a cliff edge. Look at Eddie the Eagle – does he look like someone who takes part in a sensible sporting endeavour?

I wish our athletes well and hope we grab a few more medals, however, I for one won’t be joining in!
